Electrifying profits
Myles Pemberton, marketing manager of Manbat, writes that battery care guidance from the pro shop can pay dividends
Published:  04 October, 2011

Most golfers don’t appreciate that a trolley battery is like a living organism, which needs to receive care to deliver its best performance. If this is done, it will provide many rounds of trouble-free golfing. Unfortunately, many golfers finish their round, put the trolley in the boot and forget about it until they next expect it to do another 18 holes. This is like taking the dog for a daily walk without feeding it in between!

Club professionals are in a great position to advise golfers how to maximise battery life. Here are some practical tips from Manbat, the company behind both the Lucas and Numax brands:

Always begin a round with a fully charged battery.

Always charge the battery as soon as possible after a round, even if only a few holes have been played.

Always charge the battery continuously for a minimum of 12 hours.

Always use an ‘intelligent’ continual-use charger.

Never leave the battery standing on a cold concrete floor.

Never leave the charger connected to the mains without the battery attached.

Never leave the charger connected to the battery without it being connected to the mains.

By following these simple guidelines, golfers will extend the life of their batteries to the maximum, but where – you may think – is the profit potential?

The first opportunity is the charger. To maximise battery life it is vital to use a continual-use charger such as the Numax 12V 4AH.

Even with great care, a battery will eventually fail, so the second opportunity is the sale of a new battery – and it is highly probable that the purchase will be made from the helpful pro shop that helped golfers maximise the life of their existing battery.

The pro shop can turn a tidy margin on two high value products.
