Not only did the 2011 US PGA Championship change the life of its 25-year-old winner Keegan Bradley, it marked a change of fortunes for the PGA of America’s keystone event. Last year at Whistling Straits, the PGA Championship ended under a cloud as crowd favourite Dustin Johnson was penalised two shots at the critical final hole for grounding his club in what he should have known was a bunker, albeit one of Whistling Straits’ bunkers of unrelenting anarchy.

This time around, PGA of America officials must have been ecstatic. Not only did their championship produce the first American major victory since Phil Mickelson won the 2010 Masters, but the tournament ended in a captivating crescendo, it unearthed a new, fresh American hero, and to cap it all, the hero is the son of one of their very own, a PGA club pro.

Adding even more to this wholesome American tale is the fact that as Bradley was teeing off to begin his historic final round, his father Mark was not behind the first tee at Atlanta Athletic Club – as most parents would have been – but he was dutifully behind the first tee back at Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club in Wyoming, seeing off the afternoon groups. The fact Mark missed the seminal moment of his son’s career is a shame in one respect, but as the saying goes, ‘what a pro’.

“I always thought he’d accomplish great things in golf, but not this quickly,’’ Mark admitted to the Boston Globe on the night of his son’s triumph. “He’s just a really good player – makes me proud.’’

Oh, and before I forget, welcome to the 100th issue of SGB Golf.

We hope you enjoy the read.
