The John Letters Master Model returns
Published:  30 August, 2011

Solid gold: ...but not literally. The new generation of Golden Goose putters are made from 303 stainless steel

Scottish manufacturer John Letters has resurrected its once famous Master Model series for the better player. John Letters Master Model irons first came to prominence after the Second World War, when 1947 Open champion Fred Daly had the clubs in his bag. The Master Model dynasty grew through the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, with golfers such as Dai Rees, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Bernard Gallacher and Sam Torrance all playing the irons.

The new generation of Master Model Black irons forged are made from mild carbon steel with a view to providing a soft yet solid feel, and they come with an anti-glare, black PVD finish. Assembled at John Letters’ St Andrews workshop, the traditional clubheads have a thin top-line and are available from 3-PW with an RRP starting from £649.

The matching Master Model Black driver also has a traditional look, with a pear-shaped clubhead that is one degree open at address. Built with a titanium clubface, the driver is finished in the same anti-glare black PVD as the irons and comes with an RRP of £249.

Another throwback to past generations from the new era of John Letters is the launch of a new line of Golden Goose putters. All three stainless steel putters in the series come with a distinct ‘gold oil can’ finish, and the clubfaces feature John Letters’ new ‘Roll it’ milling technology, which is intended to reduce skidding in putts. The new putters come with an RRP of £99.

The John Letters brand has been brought out of the wilderness by Direct Golf owner John Andrew. The brand is available in England exclusively via Direct Golf stores and online, and via traditional green grass retailers in Scotland.
