John Daly, Ian Woosnam, Gary Player and Paula Creamer were also part of a limited field not short on pulling power.
PowerPlay Golf’s organisers hope the new format – that brings risk and reward to the fore in a shortened golfing format – will attract interest of golf clubs around the world and for the format to rollout into amateur competitions.
“The potential for a global TV audience is undoubtedly there, but PowerPlay also has great potential at grass roots level in both mature and emerging golf markets,” Ken Schofield, chairman of PowerPlay Golf and former chief executive of the European Tour, tells SGB Golf. “This is not just about appealing to sports enthusiasts on TV. Golf for many people is too costly, too time consuming and too difficult. PowerPlay Golf can bring excitement, fun and purpose to nine-hole golf, and gets golfers round in half the time, at half the cost. It will encourage more regular play at golf clubs.
“It can create more revenue for golf clubs, extend the tee sheet, re-engage members and visitors and it has the potential to [help clubs] sell more corporate and society days.”
