The spirit of 1959
Published:  10 February, 2011

Continuing its tradition of producing innovative putters, Ping has launched the Karsten 1959 series, in tribute to the year company founder, the late Karsten Solheim, made his very first Ping putter.

Ping has taken some of its classic putter designs and given them a makeover with leading-edge technology to produce the new Karsten 1959 series. Available at UK retail this month, the series features six new models. With an RRP of £85 are the new-look Anser 2, B60, Zing, My Day and Anser X, and with an RRP of £105 is the latest Craz-E.

The new models are made with thin satin-finish top lines for a clean look, and elastomer inserts are fitted behind the clubfaces with a view to providing a soft feel, yet with the solid response and consistency of steel on the face.

The summer of ’59

Karsten Solheim filed his first patent on March 23, 1959, for the original Ping 1-A. A mechanical engineer by trade, Solheim designed and built the 1-A is his garage at home in California, because he was so frustrated with his own putting. Some called the 1-A ugly, but it made a distinctive, resonant ‘ping’ sound, and not only did Solheim’s putting improve with his innovation, but so did the putting of just about anyone who tried it. Solheim went on to revolutionise putter design in the 1960s, with the timeless Anser first introduced in 1966.
