Golf seems to have come through a spell of resolution recently, with people shaking hands and moving forwards, onwards and upwards. This sense of co-operation is all quite refreshing – and just as our Arctic winter relents. Spring is definitely in the air.

Ping and the PGA Tour have come to an agreement relating to Ping’s infamous ‘pre-April-1990-Eye2-irons-and-wedges’, meaning there are no longer any loopholes to allow Phil Mickelson to get around the new groove rules – or anyone else for that matter (it’s not as if Mickelson was the only tour golfer to ignore his moral compass and resort to using the old Eye2 wedges this year, he was just the big name with the Callaway bag).

This announcement followed soon after Foremost Golf and TGI announced that Foremost would, after all, jointly participate in the new Harrogate trade show in October, along with the PGA. The potential for this tri-party collaboration is enormous and we will follow the show’s evolution closely, starting with an exclusive interview with Foremost MD Paul Hedges in this issue.

Then just before we went to press, Tiger Woods announced he would return to tournament golf at the Masters – finally putting an end to all the speculation, which had become a farce. Some of Woods’ tour colleagues are unhappy with the timing of his return – bringing the media circus to the gates of Augusta National GC – but Woods is now in a situation where whatever he does, he will not please everybody. So there are some issues that remain unresolved.

I am in two minds about Tiger’s return. On the one hand I can’t wait to see him back on the tee, particularly at Augusta; but on the other, what was all that tear-jerking just a few weeks ago about putting family first, and how: “I do plan to return to golf one day, I just don’t know when … I don’t rule out this year”? That was all a bit Laurence Olivier wasn’t it?
