Callaway reaches the Edge
Following the success of its Diablo range in 2009, Callaway has made some advances and it is launching the Diablo Edge for 2010
Published:  17 December, 2009

You have heard it before and you will certainly hear it again, but Callaway is claiming it has built a new driver that features the largest sweetspot of any titanium driver the company has ever produced. It is called the Diablo Edge.

The company says the key to the new technology is a new precision manufacturing technique that allows Callaway to mill specific areas of the back of the Hyperbolic Cup Face. Unwanted material from the back of the clubface can be removed thanks to an acid chemical reduction process, and Callaway says the result is consistently high speeds for balls struck from all areas of the face.

According to Callaway, compared to the original Diablo driver, the company has also reduced the drag of the Diablo Edge during the downswing by 8%. This has been achieved by moving more of the weight further back in the clubhead, by constructing the clubhead in a lightweight, ultra-thin titanium, and replacing the weight with a weight chip at the back of the clubhead. The result should be the highest MOI of any Callaway driver.

Southbound sweetspot

Callaway claims it has found a way to offer greater forgiveness in its Diablo Edge irons. The company says the centre of gravity in the cavity-back clubs has been moved 50% lower in the clubhead, and 17% deeper, which should bring the sweetspot down to the lower reaches of the clubface. Callaway is also offering hybrid replacements from the 6-iron up.
