TaylorMade introduces the fifth layer
Published:  28 September, 2009

TaylorMade has launched the Penta TP, the first five-layer golf ball designed for Tour pros. TaylorMade claims the new ball combines the benefits of its TP Red and TP Black into one ball, so while it is engineered for the world's best players, the ball is supposed to benefit all golfers.

TaylorMade says that Tour pros will no longer see the need to sacrifice feel for distance, or vice versa. Made with five solid layers - cover, outer mantle, middle mantle, inner mantle and core - each layer is designed to optimise performance for five shot categories: driving, long irons, mid-irons, short irons and wedges.

"If we could create a ball that performed well in all areas we would have a revolutionary product" says Dean Snell, head of TaylorMade ball R&D. "That's what inspired us to create our newest ball, Penta TP, which is every bit the breakthrough we hoped it would be."

Sergio Garcia and Retief Goosen switched to the Penta TP for the PGA Championship and YE Yang, Justin Rose and Jason Day have since followed suit. Penta TP will be available retail in March 2010, with an RRP of £40 per dozen.
