With the poor economy, weak pound (£) and cheaper destinations such as Turkey and Morocco gaining steam, British tourists visiting the Costa del Sol last Autumn dropped by an estimated 40%, with some pro shops reporting falls in revenue as high as 80% year on year.
However, the democratisation of golf in Spain has given golf a home-grown boost. There is potential at the lower end of the hardware market in particular, with sets of clubs priced between €200 - €300 finding popularity, along with second-hand clubs, which make up approximately 25% of the hardware market. The greatest potential in the short term might be for fashionable clothing brands, for items that can be worn on and off the golf course.
