The notorious Road Hole - the par-four 17th on the Old Course, St Andrews - had taken its toll on Seve Ballesteros in the 1984 Open Championship. He had failed to make par in each of the first three rounds, and as he prepared to start the fourth round, two shots behind Tom Watson and Ian Baker-Finch, Ballesteros boldly declared that if he could par the 17th he would win.
In his inimitable way, Seve stayed true to his words; he did par the 17th and he did win his second Claret Jug. He was tied for the lead with Watson by the time he played a majestic six-iron from 200 yards that landed on the Road Hole green - played from the rough, of course - that left Seve with a routine two-putt for par. While he went on to birdie the 18th, Watson couldn't match Seve's par at 17, and Ballesteros won by two.
This is the classic sporting drama being commemorated by this 25th Anniversary set, of which 276 sets are being made - the same number of strokes played by Ballesteros that week.
Replicas of the clubs Seve played with in 1984, every club is individually numbered, and they come mounted in a deluxe display case. Forged from
8620 carbon steel, the clubs are fitted with KB Stepless rifle shafts and Gripmaster kangaroo skin grips from Australia.
The set is complete with a certificate of authenticity and a photograph of Seve signed by the golfer.
