First words...

The 138th Open Championship was a golf tournament of conflicting factors and emotions. Tom Watson would have been a champion more exalted than all of Padraig Harrington, Nick Faldo and even Seve Ballesteros; yet Stewart Cink stole in - dressed like a great big Nike key lime pie for goodness sake - to become a winner about as welcome as a hook off Turnberry's 10th.

15-all
Spearheading Ping's latest hardware launch (see Field Report, page 20) is a pair of brand new drivers, the G15 and i15, and you are reading about them in SGB Golf first

We have an intriguing situation with Ping's latest drivers, the G15 and i15. G15 is stepping into the shoes of the UK's best-selling driver of 2008, the G10, so the G15 has a lot to live up to as it is, but we also have the unknown quantity of the new, mean driving machine that is i15. This club is not replacing a previous Ping model, but following the success of Ping's i10 irons, the new driver is part of a new and expanded i15 range.

MacGregor returns from the brink
Months of speculation over the future of MacGregor were halted when Texas-based Golfsmith International announced it had bought the brand's intellectual property rights for $1.75 million in May. Minority shareholder and chairman Greg Norman stood down, and MacGregor is receiving a fresh start and new investment. Robin Barwick spoke to Douglas Poole (pictured), managing director of Golfsmith Europe

The acquisition of the MacGregor brand is a major commitment for Golfsmith.

Yes it is. MacGregor has a heritage that goes back 112 years. It has a lot of history and more major winners than any other name. It was a very good-value acquisition in a slow marketplace, and with Golfsmith International taking charge we have secured a very strong future for one of golf's most famous brands. We are going to invest in the brand and take it forward, so particularly when times are slow, this is really good news in the trade.

Daly gets a grip
John Daly, golf's beloved ‘Wild Thing', connects with blue-collar golfers better than anyone since Arnold Palmer. Twice a major winner, the American golfer spoke exclusively to SGB Golf at the Open about what he is wearing, thinking and gripping

Sticky when wet

This week at the Open was the first time I played with the John Daly Kangaroo grips right through my bag. I first tried these grips in November in Australia and I just fell in love with them. They are made by The Grip Master and this is great technology. They are great in all weather as they get stickier if it's wet, and their durability is incredible. I am hoping I won't have to change my grips for about eight years, whereas until now I have been changing my grips about once a month. The kangaroo hide here makes for a really soft, light and durable grip, and I get a lot better feel too.

To the power of 15
This is probably the most eagerly anticipated launch to the golf trade all year: SGB Golf exclusively reveals the G15 and i15 ranges from Ping. John Solheim, Ping president and CEO, talked through Ping's latest offering with Robin Barwick at Turnberry

A challenge that comes bolted on to success is that once it is achieved, you then need to find a way of raising the standard once again. This is what Ping believes it has done with the introduction of the G15 and i15 club ranges, which are succeeding G10 and i10 at the end of their two-year life cycle.

Sole music
Functionality now rivals comfort and style as a golf shoe's chief selling point. Doug Robinson, Vice President of Product Design and Development Worldwide for FootJoy, explained to Duncan Lennard how the technology in the latest FJ ranges are helping the golfer find the fairway and green - and how they are keeping an enviable market share intact

In 2004, while golf's legislators were acting over the yard or two gained by COR advances in the face of the driver, Padraig Harrington was putting a shoe into play which, according to FootJoy's stats, added 17.5 yards to his tee shots.

Taking hold
Neil Cooke, technical director of Golfsmith Europe, enters the all-important realm of grips in the sixth part of his guide to custom fitting

One of the most important parts of the golf club is the one that golfers tend to overlook, the grip. Golfers will pore over the importance of shaft weight, flex and torque, but miss the fact that if they don't have a good hold on the club all other specifications become irrelevant. There are so many golfers out there who are using grips that are in such poor condition or so ill fitting that it is impossible to play to their potential.
