First words...

Jack Nicklaus rarely rants, but he got pretty close last month at the the KPMG Golf Business Forum at Powerscourt where he was picking up a lifetime achievement award. A comment about Royal Birkdale extending 16 holes for the Open opened the floodgates about one of Jack's pet subjects, rolling back the ball.

Putters from the green baize

Spherical Blade's new range of 10 ‘curved face' putters were inspired by snooker.

S-Blade putters are designed with a North-South vertical curve on the face to enforce impact with the ball above its mid-point. Spherical Blade believe this gets the ball rolling with topspin and negates the skid and bobble. The theory is based on the same principle as a snooker player striking the cue ball above its equator to make the ball roll on.

"A website is the most important marketing tool a club can have"
In a recent interview with Golf Business News.com, Kevin Kean (pictured) of leading American golf marketing company Golf Marketing Commander suggested that the biggest obstacle facing British clubs is that they are are "not proactive enough and are not business minded". Here he qualifies those comments, and reveals how he feels his company - recently set up in Manchester - can help.

Golf Marketing Commander is an American company, based in Florida; but we have opened a UK office last November, because we are convinced we can help the fortunes of British golf clubs. Andrew Wood, company founder and CEO, is British and so am I, so we understand the needs of British clubs and how they differ to our US counterparts. The marketing principles however remain the same and can easily be applied over here.

Shaft PUREing works - and here's the proof
Neil Cooke, Golfsmith's technical director (pictured) , expains how recent testing in the US has made him a true believer when it comes to the benefits of shaft PUREing.

The problem with "technological breakthroughs" is that it is difficult to distinguish between hype and the truth. Claims are difficult to prove without cold, hard facts. It is the same problem that faces shaft PUREing: there hasn't been any data to establish if there really is any benefit.

Why hi-tech club-fitting should be on your radar
Craig Jacoby heads up the custom-fitting department at Silvermere GC, Surrey. Here he explains why he decided to introduce the FlightScope ball flight monitoring system to his set-up... and reveals the role it plays in generating business for the shop.

The FlightScope Kudu ball monitor we have here at Silvermere cost us £4,500 plus VAT; but after three months of use, we had recouped the outlay. Of course many clubs and retailers do not see the volume of business we experience at this busy club - in the height of summer we'll use it for around 150 fittings a month, charging £40 for a fitting with a 50% refund half if the customer purchases. Yet to me, employing a system like this is a no-brainer.

The classic teardrop head shape VeloCT Escape complements the VeloCT iron, fairway wood and driver ranges with sleek design and low profile features. Designed to get you out of trouble, they also deliver great performance from the fairway and tee when accuracy is paramount.

PGA Collection
IQ and System Match

The IQ replaces the 3 and 4 irons with a much easier-to-hit compact hybrid wood shaped head. High ball flight increases carry and reduces roll once landed to allow much more confidence and control hitting into greens. An innovative head design produces a more powerful and penetrating ball flight. Loft options are 3 (20°), 4 (23°) and 5 (26°).

Nike
Sumo/Sumo2

The Sumo range offers high MOI and clubs that perform well when hit off-centre, and the utilities are no exception. Srixon
AD

Srixon believe the replacement for their original AD Hybrid is a more powerful weapon, thanks to the deeper CG created by their heaviest ever Tungsten nickel weights that are inserted in both the toe and heel of the club. These are positioned for greater consistency and accuracy and increase the sweet spot, as well as creating a more powerful face at impact.

Tour Edge
Bazooka GeoMax

Designed for the average golf club member, the Tour Edge Bazooka GeoMax features a deeper clubface for greater head stability and forgiveness on off-centre shots.

Wilson
FYbrid

The Wilson Golf R&D team developed this club with a new sole with heel, toe and central shaping to boost playability from all lies. The central relief helps stop the club bouncing into the ball at impact if it hits the ground too early, a common cause of thin shots. The toe and heel reliefs also make the clubs more playable from sloping lies and allow the club to be laid open or closed for more advanced shot-making.

Cobra
Baffler Pro

This is a technically advanced, non-offset long iron alternative with optimal launch, trajectory, and workability. Performance goals include optimal trajectory for high swing speed/high ball speed players, enhanced workability for "shot making" and a tour head shape and an all black top-line at address. Nicklaus
Claw Hybrid

The Claw Hybrid aims to cut down on sole drag as it cuts through the turf. The design of a centre runner on the sole, flanked by thinner stabilizer rails, create less drag through impact, allowing the clubhead to stay online more easily.

PING
G10

Viper Tour

The Viper Tour Hybrid is constructed from 17.4 stainless combined with a thin 2.2mm Carpenter Custom face, built for maximum energy transfer at impact. The hybrid utilises the 3WT technology for customising ball flight giving players the option to customise ball trajectory and draw and fade bias using the three-way weight ports constructed into the head.

Titleist
585.H

The new 585.H blends the best playing characteristics of fairway metals and long irons to provide greater versatility and shot making options from the tee, fairway and rough. The club provides fairway metal-type launch with a flatter ball flight for iron-like control, and is available in 17°, 19°, 21° and 24° lofts.
