Greg Norman Collection sold
Published:  10 March, 2009

The week of the Orlando PGA Show was very busy for MacGregor Golf, even though the American club manufacturer made a late withdrawal from the event. During the show, the ink was not yet dry on the announcement that the Greg Norman Collection apparel brand had been sold to the New York-based Tharanco Group, while rumours of a MacGregor takeover reached every corner of the well-proportioned Orange County Convention Centre.

MacGregor's CEO Michael Setola has left to head up Greg Norman Collection in the Tharanco stable, and Tony Wilkinson, brand director for the Greg Norman Collection licence in Europe, welcomes the move.

"I am very excited about the recent purchase of Greg Norman Collection by Tharanco Group," Wilkinson tells SGB Golf. "I have met with Haresh Tharani, CEO of Tharanco Group, and members of his executive team, and given the wealth of apparel experience Tharanco brings to GNC, this is good news. We will be looking to introduce a lifestyle element to our range while continuing to develop our golf apparel."

Wilkinson will be hoping for an era of stability under the new ownership, having come through a past year of upheaval under MacGregor.

For MacGregor Golf, meanwhile, the future remains uncertain. Greg Norman remains chairman and part-owner of America's second-oldest equipment brand, but its European operation was shut down last year, and no new products have been introduced so far in 2009.
