Fehring named President
Published:  10 March, 2009

Germany's Heinz Fehring has been named president of the PGAs of Europe. The club professional, who was instrumental in the rise of a teenage Bernhard Langer, has begun a two-year term in succession to former European Tour supremo Ken Schofield.

"Heinz has been a fantastic asset since he came onto the board in 1993," says chairman Sandy Jones. "Representing Germany, as one of the strongest nations, he was very important to us, bringing a truly international perspective. He certainly came with a vision for Europe in which all of the countries had to work together, and he had a better understanding of the concept of unity than many at that time."

Fehring gave the 15-year-old Langer his first job as an assistant pro at the Strasslach Club in Munich in 1972, and he was also the first pro ever to give the future double-Masters champion a lesson. Langer, who moved away from home for the first time to work for Fehring, has described him as "like a second father to me".
