Debate on golf's benefits to society
Published:  28 October, 2008

Delegates at the PGAs of Europe's 19th Annual Congress will debate the important part golf can play for regions deciding to create or expand a golfing culture.

Under the heading of ‘The Benefits that Golf Brings to Society', a programme of specialist speakers will make presentations at the Hotel Nelva in Murcia, Spain, on Wednesday, November 18.

The rest of the Congress agenda will take place once again at the Hotel 525, near to where the International Team Championship is staged at Roda Golf and Beach Resort, with its PGA-branded academy.

The purpose of these presentations is to underline how a strong golfing culture inevitably brings with it a whole list of social, economic and environmental benefits. As possibly the largest new golfing destination in Europe, Murcia is the ideal location to discuss such a far-reaching topic.

Speakers can underline how the region's development plans bring to the community unique opportunities for people of both genders and all ages to experience outdoor sporting competition in pleasant surroundings and in an atmosphere of fair play and sound etiquette. As a result of this attractive scenario there are other wider benefits to be enjoyed, and the Congress will concentrate on three specific strands of this, comprising social (including health), economic and environmental elements.

An important feature of the debate will be the findings of the KPMG Economic Impact Study, which is approved by the PGAs of Europe and other pan-European golf organisations. It covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa, followed up by a similar study relating to Europe alone.

In tandem with the Annual Congress, Austria will be striving to retain the International Team Championship title they won narrowly last year, ahead of Wales.
