TGI Golf estimates the counterfeit golf industry in the UK alone to be worth £275 million, with many illegal imitation products traded on the internet to unsuspecting consumers. Instead of buying premium brands for a perceived bargain, golfers are often spending money on clubs with clubheads made from recycled tin cans and scrap metal, shafts made of fibreglass or plastic, and grips made from lightweight rubber.
"We are contacted regularly by factories asking if we want to sell their products, which are clearly counterfeit," says Eddie Reid, managing director of TGI Golf. "Golfers who buy cheap golf equipment over the internet may think they are getting a good deal, but real value for money comes from the expert, professional advice, custom fitting and after sales service that TGI Golf members can provide."
