Essentially just a ring of paper, the Divot-Stopper has been developed by Lichfield golfer Nigel Nangreave, who made the first prototype to protect his own lawn when practising his chipping at home. Now Nangreave's local club, Aston Wood, has placed an order for 10,000 Divot-Stoppers, which cost 2p each.
"I invented the Divot-Stopper to elevate the ball away from the ground just enough for the player's club to reach any part of the ball's surface," says Nangreave, who trades as Nangreave Green Tee Golf. "The Divot-Stopper allows golfers to achieve maximum shot control without taking a divot. And as each Divot-Stopper costs just 2p, they are a very cost-effective way for a club to preserve their fairways."
Nangreave estimates it costs golf clubs 5p to repair each divot, and also that 80% of the UK's 5 million regular golfers use eco-unfriendly plastic tees.
The Divot-Stopper is 100% recyclable and has plenty of room for clubs and companies to brand them. The R&A has allowed them to be used in competitions and Nangreave is offering sample packs of 400 for £10.
